Hi, we're the Christies.
Over the last six years or so we have been working on our home bartending craft. We love cocktails and have spent the time learning how to mix and pour the perfect drink at home.
Where we started
We met, fell in love, and got married all thanks to coincidence and a good friend. We are new-ish parents. (Which makes our rationale for learning to pour a good drink vs. finding & paying for a sitter on a Friday night make more sense, right?) We love to travel the world, eat good food, imbibe consciously, listen to good music, and to live in the moment. We live in Los Angeles.
Not including our years of *researching* some of the best restaurants and bars in LA & the world, we started out by learning how to make an Old Fashioned; a perfect, well-balanced Old Fashioned. One where it’s supremely boozy, sweet, and smooth. As our journey of cocktail exploration continued, we started to learn how to make other classics, then bitters, syrups, shrubs, and liqueurs. It turns out it’s all pretty easy.
The beginning of The Rituals
Brian began to dive deeper into the world of cocktails and started a blog with a friend, TheRituals.net. They decided they would challenge themselves to make every cocktail in The Complete World Bartender Guide: The Standard Reference to More than 2,400 Drinks, copyright 1977. The challenge proved to be more of a daunting experiment/clinical trial testing their fortitude while still trying to learn about cocktails. Not only were most of the drinks awful, but they also required an extensive amount of work to research the recipes, and create the specialty liqueurs and syrups. But, this led to an almost insatiable need to know all about the industry including interests in distilling, beer making, cooking, technique, and trying new craft cocktail trends.
Soon enough, a new nightly ritual emerged. We would get home from work, start dinner, and then decide on which cocktails would work best for the night. It’s more than that, though. It’s also the ritual of going out to have a drink with friends or enjoying a nice dinner. The Rituals.
And here we are
Times change and the book challenge became a thing of the past, but it opened up a new world of home bartending. We get excited about planning what we are going to eat and drink each night. We love finding new delicious things to try and curating the tools we keep in our home.
We’ve learned over the years is that we can create delicious craft cocktails, coffee, tea, and food at home with just a little knowledge and some trial and error. Plus, it’s more fun, less expensive, and impressive to be able to make your drinks for your friends, your partner, or just yourself.
